Overall Summary

Candidate is responsible for driving the accounting close process to completion with minimal supervision, while overseeing the General Accounting function and managing a team of three individuals in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.


He or she will ensure that the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements are prepared timely and in compliance with all financial policies, as well as Sarbanes-Oxley, SEC and US GAAP requirements.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Oversees the General Accounting function, which includes, but is not limited to, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of monthly accounting closes, including journal entry processing; intercompany accounting and settlement; treasury operations; internal financial reporting; balance sheet and income statement analysis and reconciliation; equity compensation administration and associated accounting; transacting and corresponding with the stock transfer agent; invoice and purchase order processing; corporate credit card and expense reimbursement programs; and extensive use of the company’s enterprise resource planning (NetSuite) and other systems. Assists with other areas as needed, such as payroll review and board of director/committee presentations.

  • Provides technical accounting GAAP guidance and support to stakeholders, especially around equity awards and share-based compensation expense. At times, this may include involvement in due diligence and other activities.

  • Ensures that company financial records, under responsibility, are maintained in compliance with company policies, as well as Sarbanes-Oxley, US GAAP and SEC requirements. Responsible for reviewing monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure this compliance.

  • Assists with the completion of Federal and State tax reporting requirements (including income, property, sales and use, payroll and other local taxes), insurance reports and other reports required by government regulation, as needed.

  • Communicates regularly with management and employees across the organization, particularly around equity compensation administration, corporate credit card and expense reimbursement programs, and clinical trial/partner accruals.

  • Ensures that the company’s accounting systems continue to operate as required. Involved in validating/designing suggested changes to ensure accounting requirements continue to be met.

  • Coordinates work relating to both periodic internal and external audits of the company’s financial records. Responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations, related to areas of responsibility, resulting from the audit findings.

  • Ensures that the accounting department is staffed with qualified personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities noted above. Responsible for continued development of these associates.

  • Direct management responsibilities for the following: Manager of Procurement, Staff Accountant, and Accounts Payable/Expense Reimbursement Intern.



  • Undergraduate Degree in Accounting

  • CPA certification preferred

Prior Experience:

  • 7 - 10 years of combined Public Accounting and Industry (publicly traded) accounting experience with extensive use of enterprise resource planning system(s) required, preferably using NetSuite.

  • Excellent Excel skills required.

  • Prior management experience required.

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and internal controls/Sarbanes-Oxley, required.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills are mandatory.

  • Demonstrated ability to form, lead and develop high-performing teams.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across departmental functions.
